Other takes on Star Wars

These are old, but I'm posting them here anyway because it makes it easier to find them again. Really.

Toy Matinee: Last Plane Out (video)

Yeah, it's kind of old. But this little-known group from the 1990s is worth remembering.

Two Pound Planet

How stoked am I to hear unreleased tunes from an awesome and way underappreciated band from the early 1990s?

Mega-Pirahna: Even better than Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus?

Hulu has me believing it's a possibility:

I don't think I've seen footwork like that since "Dynaman."

"Mask of the Great Deceiver" by Kerry Livgren

I had music playing in the background while doing political blogging and heard Kerry Livgren's "Mask of the Great Deceiver" for the first time in a long time.

The bass sound was a dead ringer for Paul Goddard's (Atlanta Rhythm Section). Same Rickenbacker vibe that infused his famous solo on "Another Man's Woman." Other than Goddard's involvement, the song was memorable for Ronnie James Dio's vocals.

I'm giving the Livgren catalog a bit of a review. I expect that the stroke Livgren experienced in 2009 will leave him unable to play guitar anything like he once did. But we can expect him to continue songwriting, I'm sure.

Dixie Dregs (Mark O'Connor era) video: "Cruise Control"

I was lucky enough to see the Steve Morse Band in concert recently. Not just because the band is so great, but because they don't tour much now that Steve spends so much time touring with Deep Purple.

During the concert I was reminded again of how the DVD material thus far available for the Steve Morse Band doesn't do the group proper justice. And reminded of it again when I stumbled across a old video of the Dixie Dregs with Mark O'Connor on fiddle. This captures the group as it was (though I only saw this incarnation briefly when they opened for ZZ Top in Lakeland, FL). Enjoy.
